General Directories:
This type resource is differentiated by the fact that their content is
not managed by an automated database but by a system of categorized
lists. Often the submissions are evaluated and then included in the
directory based on a human reviewer’s analysis. It is critical
therefore to prepare your submission as completely as possible since
the review process can be lengthy, strict and somewhat judgmental.

Search Engines: These are the database driven resources that most
people are familiar with. Their rankings are determined by an
algorithm that calculates how a site rates of specific criteria and
then places it in the appropriate slot in the rankings. Each search
engine uses its own criteria to complete that algorithm.
Unfortunately, since the search engines are trying to create
algorithms that generate rankings based on the merits of the web sites
content, they don’t tell us what these criteria are. It is up to us to
figure them out. However, once you know where to look and the right
tools to use the job becomes much easier. |

Pay Per Click: This is the newest and
most popular type of search engine at present. The ability to place
your site in front of very targeted web surfers and then only having
to pay when they actually click through to your site is very
attractive to web marketers. The challenge is to make sure that your
site converts enough of these click thrus into customers to customers
to justify the price you pay for each click. as with any search engine
campaign, if you target the wrong keyword phrase you can waste a lot
of time and money here. These types of campaigns require the most
maintenance but do have the ability to drive very targeted traffic.
Plus, if you are willing to bid what it takes, it is very easy to get
top rankings. |
