Good Day,
As always, thank you for taking a moment of your valuable time to
review our newsletter. We hope that this issue offers some valuable
information for you. We always welcome your feedback.
SEARCH ENGINE TIP: Don’t take for granted that you are targeting the
right keywords. Just because it is what you think people are entering
in the search engines or just because it is in your competition’s meta
tags doesn’t mean that it is the most effective keyword to target. To
determine the right keywords you must consider the competition for
that keyword, the number of people who actually enter it as well as
your ability to draw and convert users who select your site from the
search results.
Here’s an example: ‘Charlotte Car Dealers’
Result: This will be an ineffective keyword phrase for the following
reasons.
Most search engines place the most weight on the first word in the
phrase. Since the actual number of instances that this site would use
the term ‘Charlotte’ is limited they will not rank well versus sites
that use it often (government and other Charlotte resource sites)
The phase ‘car dealers’ did not appear in the top 30 keyword phrases
entered into search engines when people are looking for this type of
business online. Since it is not being used it will not be effective
in driving traffic.
By knowing this we are able to avoid targeting the wrong phrase and
then research other possible terms to determine the most effective
keyword phrase. Since search engines have a tremendous ability to
drive targeted traffic but can also eat up time and energy it is
doubly important to make sure you have made the right choice before
you begin submission.
CASE STUDY: How do you know when you have targeted the right keywords?
It’s not just good search engine rankings. The real goal is getting
business as a result of that placement.
January 2002 eBasedEvolution was retained to manage the search engine
optimization for www.southernlightphoto.com. Prior to that date the
site had been indexed and included in all of the major engines but had
not ranked for any of the terms that were determined to be necessary
for driving traffic. eBasedEvolution completed the research on the
most effective keyword phrases, created a new search engine profile,
developed a new keyword focused and keyword rich Home Page and then .
. .
February 2002, completed submission targeting top 10 search engine
placement.
March 2002 the site was re-indexed by the major engines and went from
nonexistent rankings to 4th position on Yahoo and 2nd position on
Google for the major keyword phrase targeted. That ranking quickly
translated into a . . .
April 2002 major booking that covered the development of his original
web site as well as the entire search engine optimization program.
